Tuesday 21st August 2007

Location: Market Bosworth, Leicestershire

Today: 6 miles, 0 locks. Total distance: 455 miles.  Total locks: 381

Cool and dull. Reasonable t-mobile GPRS reception here.

Took the dogs out for a walk into Dadlington yesterday evening. There is a pub there called the Dog and Hedgehog. It’s a free house and looks like they may do good food. On the way back down to the hill we met a couple of locals that told us that the food served in the pub was good as far as they can remember. May give it a try when passing on our way back along the Ashby. It seems difficult to find a pub these days that is not serving defrosted, mass produced rubbish – or – maybe we have just been unlucky of late?

Pulled the pins this morning around 09:30 and headed on northward along the Ashby. Some lovely scenery. Stopped off at Sutton Wharf to dump rubbish and to top up with water.

Moored up near bridge 43 as there is a foot path across the fields to Market Bosworth. We moored up in the reeds today as yesterday we ended up with a boat mooring 6 feet behind us for the night. The boat had young children and a noisy dog on board. I don’t think we will have the same trouble tonight as it is a difficult spot to moor at but still a very nice position.

We walked the path to Market Bosworth with the dogs, just over a mile each way. The town is small but lovely with a market square. There is a co-op there plus butcher, post office, grocery store and a few other odds and ends of shops. Will probably visit again tomorrow and take a few photos.

UPDATE: Wednesday 22nd

Decided to stay on here and have a washing, hoovering and general cleaning day. Also, it is a nice spot and a pleasant walk across the fields to Market Bosworth town.

Walked the dogs up the hill to the town to get the papers. Wednesday is market day so we picked up some veg and odds and ends from the market in the village square.

Had a phone call from Wilson’s of Kinver, the pram hood is ready and they will be coming out tomorrow to fit it. Once the pram hood is fitted, we can almost guarantee to have dry weather for the next 6 months.

Dry today but very windy and cool for the time of year. The fire has been lit and kept on tick-over since last Saturday.

Interesting coincidence, the battle of Bosworth took place on 22nd August 1485 – today is the anniversary. Richard III was killed by Henry VIII a mile or so from where we are currently moored.
