Hints and Tips from living on a narrow boat. Also notes to ourselves if we are ever lucky enough to commission our own build. 1) Fit the biggest water tank that you can as sometimes it is not easy to get to a water supply every two or three days. 2) If having a pump out toilet, fit the biggest holding tank that you can to avoid having to pump out too frequently. 3) If possible, have a 'dirty area' that can be entered from outside so that you have somewhere to remove muddy boots and wet coats before entering the living area. Even more important if you have dogs!! 4) Fit good size hot water tank (calorifier). 5) Do not build around items that may need replacement – example, the hot water tank is in a cupboard but the door into the cupboard is not wide enough to remove and replace the tank should it fail. The tank must have been plumbed in and then the cupboard built around it!! 6) Have the stove central to the boat. The stove on Ten Bob Note is right at the stern end so needs to be kept hot in order to keep the bow end comfortable. 7) Go for an engine in an engine room to make life easier when it comes to oil changes etc. The engine room can also be used as the dirty area as mentioned in 3 above. 8) Fit a stand alone diesel generator of at least 4kw for running battery chargers, washing machine etc.
