Tuesday 21st April 2009 Location: Abingdon, Oxfordshire, River Thames Today: 8 miles, 5 locks. Total distance: 2085 miles. Total locks: 1407 Another beautiful day weather wise, warm with clear blue skies. Pulled the pins around 09:30 and dropped down through Isis lock and onto the Thames. Flew down the river at speeds of up to 5MPH !!!!! Seems strange to be on flowing water again. Moored up at Abington – a first. Have passed through Abington a couple of times in the past but this is the first actual visit to the town. Had a walk around the town after lunch, a pleasant place with a bit of modern mixed in with the old. The repairs to the bank just above Isis lock are a vast improvement on what was there last year (photo below). Unfortunately, it is still very shallow in places and it can be difficult getting right into the side – a shame as good visitor moorings on the canal at Oxford are few and far between.
