Ten Bob Note

18th June 2007

Location: Wightwick, Staffs  N52:34:11 W2:12:35

Today: 5 miles, 3 locks. Total distance: 163 miles.   Total locks: 116

Moved the boat back to Aldersley junction and walked the 2 miles to the builders merchant. Picked up everything we needed except the high temperature silicon sealant as they didn’t have any.

Problem, the two sheets of 4’x4’ Asbestolux is far too heavy to carry 2 miles back to the boat. Decided to carry it as far as the canal and see if we could get it brought down the two miles and twenty one locks on a boat.

As we got to lock number one, the top lock, a boat was just entering it for their decent. We asked them if they would be so kind as to carry the boards down to the junction for us if we helped them with all the locks. Unsurprisingly, they didn’t seem too exited about the idea at first until they realised that we too were off a boat. Anyway, we all ended up having a bit of a laugh as we crewed their boat down the locks. The whole trip took two and a half hours which is quite good going. We parted company at the junction after they took some photographs of us and their boat carrying the cargo. Their names were David and Julie on nb Lenina. We were very grateful for their help.

We were so lucky with the weather. There was some rain early on as we walked up to the builders merchant but it cleared by the time we got there. The weather remained dry all the way down through the locks  which is just as well as the boards were on the roof. Two minutes after we transferred the stuff to Ten Bob Note and set off southward, it started to pour down. We had a very wet journey to our current mooring but did not want to spend another night around Wolverhampton. We are now moored up in the countryside again.

The plan for tomorrow is to fit the boarding to get it out of the way as it is cluttering up the boat somewhat.
