24th June 2007 Location: Stourport, Worcs N52:19:15 W2:15:52 Today: 7 miles, 9 locks. Total distance: 185 miles. Total locks: 146 Got up this morning to light rain. Decided to head to Stourport on Severn via Kidderminster as we needed water. The rain cleared by late morning. Took a photo of St Mary’s church at Kidderminster – see below, a lovely setting by the side of the canal. Stopped off at Sainsbury and Tesco in Kidderminster, both stores being right on the side of the canal with very good moorings. Also moored up and walked to B & Q for tiles for the fire surround and a few other bits and pieces. Struggled back to the boat with 3 boxes of tiles, a bit on the heavy side!! Stopped in Stourport basin to take on water. For such a busy place, it must have one of the slowest taps on the canal. After 45 minutes, the tank still wasn’t full but decided to move on anyway as it was getting late in the day. Dropped down through the locks and onto the river Severn. The water level is still high and the water is very brown. Headed down stream to the first lock. All of the locks on the Severn are operated by lock keepers. We asked the lock keeper about places to moor for the night as being a river, you can’t just moor anywhere. The lock keeper told us it would be OK for us to moor on the pontoon just at the bottom of the lock. We passed through the lock and moored up for the night. There is a water point on the pontoon so we filled the tank up and put on the washing machine to do a wash. We had a chat with the lock keeper later on in the evening while out walking the dogs. He told us that four inches of rain has been forecast for the area, could be in for a wet time!! Kidderminster lock St Mary's church - Kidderminster River Servern at Stourport
