6th June 2007 Location: Branston, Staffs. N52:47:13 W1:40:53 Today: 7 miles, 2 locks. Total distance: 110 miles. Total locks: 78 Walked into the village after breakfast to pick up the papers and a few odds and ends from the co-op. Pulled the pins and headed for Branston where we have arranged to meet up with Fran and Vic, our friends from Australia. We moored up beside the Branston beautiful water park. We booked Fran and Vic into the Riverside hotel yesterday afternoon after phoning the Burton on Trent visitors advice centre. The staff in the advice centre were very helpful and suggested the Riverside hotel as it is only a twenty minute walk from the canal and has a good reputation. On arrival at Branston, we had lunch on deck as the weather is lovely again then walked with the dogs to the hotel to have a look at it. The advice centre was right, it looks like a nice place, situated on the banks of the river. Passed nb Balmaha at a bridge hole to the east of Burton on Trent this morning. I used to follow their blog while I was still at work. Now that I am retired, I just don’t seem to be able to find the time to monitor the blog as much but I do still have a quick look now and again. A few days back, we bought a new long throw aluminium windlass for Ron. We paid £14.50 for it. We have stopped off at a couple of other chandlers over the last few days and have seen the exact same windlass at £17.50 and £22.50. It’s amazing how different the pricing can be!!
